My dear friend, welcome on board. This fast is about abstaining from doing the thing (s) God has put on your heart for 40 days. Some people are not going to watch TV, some people are shutting down their What’s App, some people are not eating a particular food item as we pray every single day seeking God’s face.
Organize time to pray in the morning and in the evening and make each prayer session at least 45 mins long. It is a time of sacrifice, let’s aim to spend much more time with God than we usually do. Let the Holy Spirit push you, it will not be in vain. If you can spend 1 hour to pray and worship in the morning, 1 hour in the evening or at night that will be awesome.
Time to appropriate God’s Word. 2018 is a Year of Victories!
Let’s go to Luke 15:11-24:
Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. 14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. 15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.
17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’
20 “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.”
The Powerful Word of God, Praise him for it. This passage is known as the Parable of the Prodigal Son.
When we grow up we gradually get to discover that life is not the bed of roses we think it is all the time, and I would like to tell you that the right approach to life is what will help us create a full and vibrant existence. Every approach to life we need to reach that destination (a full and vibrant existence) has been given to us by God in his precious Word. Luke 15:11-24 perfectly illustrates that. What is the approach to life God is teaching us here?
Significant life events can transform us and lead us into a place where we develop our own defense and coping mechanisms. It can be any event from a divorce or abuse to a long period of financial struggle.
My friend any strategies or mechanisms that do not involve God and his Word will never be helpful enough. We need God again and again and again. Always. We need what is in his word to be added and to be the center of what we are doing.
Look at what life threw at the Prodigal Son: he spent all he had, a famine now arose in the land when he had spent all and he began to be in want. Then he joined himself to someone who sent him into his fields to feed swine, I don’t think that was his dream job or a position he ever thought he would find himself in. He considered feeding himself with the pods that the swine ate because he came to a point where he was perishing with hunger and no one was giving him anything.
Whatever has happened or is happening in your life that needs fixing, God is saying he is the safe place where he wants you to come. He wants you to return back to him. He is waiting arms wide up and just like the prodigal son’s father when God sees you arriving at the entrance of his kingdom, he will smile, rejoice, be glad, hug you with his love and celebrate you! After all he is your heavenly father and the creator of every part of your body, every part that makes you. It is his breath in you.
The prodigal son’s father said: “…for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found” (Verse 24). God wants you to stop running away from him, stop relying on your own strength, stop keeping that area of your life where you need help away from him, stop saying ‘you got this’, no he got this for you. Give it to him, speak up to the Lord.
The victory that you might need right now might be victory over the sin of adultery (I am using the word ‘sin’ because we have to separate darkness from light, right? It is not judgmental, it is the separation between what is of God and what clearly isn’t of God so we keep a clear overview of his truth in front of our eyes), victory over the sin of smoking, victory over the sin of gossiping and backbiting, victory over the sin of hardness of heart towards God, victory over the sin of bitterness. It might also be a victory in your finances, a victory in your marriage, a victory in your ministry/church or a victory in your spiritual life.
Whatever the victory you are asking God to receive right now is and whether you caused the problem or not, he is prepared to do it. Continue this fast, be repentant, be desperate for him, be hungry for him, be after him and you will see what he will do in your life in the name of Jesus.
We are the prodigal sons / daughters and God is our Father. We are all learning from him and he wants to help us so we can we make it to heaven and be with him forever. He loves us.
Lord forgive me for being hard heart towards you. I don’t want my own strength anymore, Lord I want your strength in me, I want your power over my problems! I am willing to let you in Father and do what you do best and what only you can do: bless me! Bless me my abundant God and give me what you know I need the most right now. I trust you Lord, I will follow you Lord. Save me and breathe resurrection into every part of my life that has died or been affected by negative events. I receive your life right now in me Lord in Jesus name. I receive the blood of my savior Jesus as the source for my healing and restoration right now Lord! I receive you in my life Lord in the name of Jesus name, I pray, amen!
Take a piece of paper and write down anything you are being led by the Holy Spirit to confess to God. Be specific, name the people involved to God, name the place involved, name the occasion. It is very important to be specific with your confession. Then confess it out loud to God, ask him for forgiveness and receive his forgiveness.
Songs to sing to God:
God bless you!
