My dear friend, welcome on board. This fast is about abstaining from doing the thing (s) God has put on your heart for 40 days. Some people are not going to watch TV, some people are shutting down their What’s App, some people are not eating a particular food item as we pray every single day seeking God’s face.
Organize time to pray in the morning and in the evening and make each prayer session at least 45 mins long. It is a time of sacrifice, let’s aim to spend much more time with God than we usually do. Let the Holy Spirit push you, it will not be in vain. If you can spend 1 hour to pray and worship in the morning, 1 hour in the evening or at night that will be awesome.
Time to appropriate God’s Word. 2018 is a Year of Victories!
When we sing to God we often tell him in our songs that he has never failed us. The truth is every time God did not fail us, it is because we fully opened our hearts to him and aligned ourselves with what he wanted to do. Remember what I shared in yesterday’s post about last year? God said to me: what he says is what he is planning to do. That word he delivers is the plan he is about to fulfill. So we just need to position ourselves. This fast is the action, the sacrifice before God. All my movies and TV series I never miss, I sacrifice it all to give my entire mind, soul and body to God almighty at this time.
Effective prayer is not about getting what we want but aligning ourselves with what God wants to do. We are not praying according to our own will. We are not caring for our own comfort but let us do according to God’s will. The first step he is talking about is forgiveness.
Psalm 66:18-20 tells us:
“If I had cherished sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened;
but God has surely listened
and has heard my prayer.
Praise be to God,
who has not rejected my prayer
or withheld his love from me!” (NIV)
My dear friend the Lord will never listen if we regard iniquity in our hearts, that is one precious thing I have learned from him. Our freedom and our victories are very much bound to this. We know for sure that God will hear our prayer and forgive and forget our sin after we confess it. The confession part must happen though. How can we appropriate our blessings if we cannot ask God for forgiveness? That is as impossible as 1 + 2 = 12.
I read a powerful story today of a woman who attended a Christian conference during her first year as a believer and she happened to share her room with another woman. They were having a conversation about forgiveness and the other woman who was called Jean shared with her “God never forgave me”. So the new believer quoted Micah 7:19 to prove that God forgave her. Jean kept saying “God never forgave me”. The new believer quoted every verse from the bible she could on forgiveness. Jean kept holding fast to the fact that God didn’t forgive her. Then the new believer finally asked her if she ever confessed her sin? Jean replied “No”. In that very moment she asked Jean to silently pray and confess her sin to God. After a few moments Jean said: “It’s gone! My sin is gone! I did what you told me to do. I told God my sin and it’s gone!” After this something else changed about Jean to everyone’s astonishment. The new believer shares she became a radiant, vibrant, nonstop talker!
Sometimes we think that when we acknowledge that what we have done is wrong before God then that step is enough. We need to confess it out loud to God. When we confess our sin to God and receive his forgiveness, we become one with him, we can now become one with our blessings. Not before.
Let’s go back to the start. Let’s ask him to show us today what needs to be confessed. Among the things that God will show you are things you probably thought were not a big deal but it is to God.
Stovall Weems wrote in ‘Awakening: A New Approach to Faith, Fasting, and Spiritual Freedom’: “Prayer and fasting is the preparation we go through to create the container that is ready for the new thing God wants to do in and through us.” Powerful!
Indeed God wants to do a new thing in your life through the word he has sent. Let’s pray.
- Lord forgive me that when it hurt I relied on my own strength
- Lord forgive me that I shut you down
- Lord forgive my shallow faith so many times
- Lord forgive my selfishness
- Lord forgive me for being proud
- Lord forgive me for disrespecting others
- Lord forgive me for hating others
- Lord forgive me for insulting others
- Lord forgive me for bad mouthing others
- Lord forgive me for not forgiving when you wanted me to
Lord I am desperate for your touch and your move at this time in my life. Let me experience the other victories you have prepared for me this year. Break the chains of what is holding me back. Receive my sacrifice at this time Lord.
Take a piece of paper and list everything God is showing you needs to be confessed. Be specific, name the person you have done it to, name the place where you have done it, name the occasion. It is very important to be specific with your confession. Then say the things on the list out loud to God and ask him to forgive you… Receive his forgiveness.
Songs to sing to God:
God bless you!
